Cholesterol drugs may reduce breast cancer risk
Drugs to lower cholesterol can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and heart disease, suggests a new study. The idea that cholesterol inhibition can prevent the development of cancer is ten years. So far, the results of studies of cholesterol lowering drugs were remained unsuccessful. Some studies have found no effect on cancer risk, some have found a benefit, and others have found an increased risk of cancer in users of some drugs. The new study is one of the first targeted according to a risk for breast cancer.But the author Jane Cauley says its too early, the risk of breast cancer reduced the list of drugs to lower cholesterol added benefits.We just need more information and confirmation studies, says Cauley, an epidemiologist at the University of Pittsburgh.
Cauley and colleagues studied 7528 women over 65 with a mean age of 77. Women participated in a study of osteoporotic fractures. On a visit to the clinic during the study, the researchers asked the women if they took any medication to lower blood cholesterol. To verify the data, the researchers asked the women to bring all their medications for the clinic.About 8% of women taking a statin to lower cholesterol through the average of other drugs such as niacin or gemfibrozil. The researchers did not collect information about how long women had been taking medication. For the most part, women who took cholesterol-lowering drugs have similar patterns of use of hormone therapy, women who do not. progestin for women held the risk of breast cancer.)
