African Conference of Red Cross and Red Crescent opens in Algeria
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will attend the opening ceremony today for the 6th Pan African Conference of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the Algerian capital, Algiers. The conference, with the participation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies throughout the continent, will answer some of the humanitarian issues of interest to Africa such as HIV / AIDS, food security and public health. The ICRC is active in Africa for 70 years and maintains a network of operational and regional delegations across the continent.During his keynote address at the conference, the ICRC vice-president, Professor Jacques Forster, highlighted the growing cooperation between the ICRC and the African National Red Cross and Red Crescent. According to Professor
Forster, joint activities in countries such as Liberia, Algeria, CTE Coast, Uganda and Sudan clearly illustrate the importance of working together to help victims of armed conflict.The conference in Algiers monitor humanitarian obligations of Red Cross and Red Crescent Pan African Conference in Ouagadougou made her last four years that identified HIV / AIDS, food security and public health as the most important problems of the continent. For the ICRC, strengthening the capacity of Africa to the Red Cross and Red Crescent to tackle these problems remains an important priority as HIV / AIDS, food shortages and the lack of adequate health care continue to affect negatively the most vulnerable in conflict situations.
